Sleeve Gastrectomy

SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY

This is the most commonly performed weight loss surgery in the United States of America and worldwide.

The sleeve gastrectomy or gastric sleeve procedure is performed using minimally invasive techniques. It is the most commonly performed weight loss surgery in the United States since 2013. It was initially performed as a first stage of a two stage operation. The successful weight loss with the first stage of the operation lead to the sleeve gastrectomy being utilized as a primary weight loss operation.

The sleeve gastrectomy involves permanent removal of 75-85% of the stomach. There is no re-routing of the intestinal tract and no implantation of an artificial device. The recovery is generally quick and the weight loss initially is comparable to the gastric bypass and superior to the gastric band.

On average, patients lose 60-80% of their excess weight with this surgery. There are many health conditions which are resolved or markedly improved with sleeve gastrectomy. In several studies, a high percentage of patients had improvement or resolution of their hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol) and sleep apnea.
